IU's faculty-led approach to generative AI

Indiana University’s approach to generative AI is shaped by faculty leadership and shared governance. In Spring 2024, the University Faculty Council, working with the Office of the President, convened a Generative AI Task Force to develop principles, guidance, and policy recommendations that reflect IU’s academic values and the realities of day-to-day teaching, scholarship, and service.

The Task Force report is intentionally cross-disciplinary, with members from multiple campuses and fields, including humanities and arts representation alongside technology, library, and student affairs perspectives. That mix matters because GenAI is not just a technical shift. It changes how we write, interpret, create, cite, and teach the work of being human at a research university.

IU units have been using the report’s recommendations to inform practical actions, including guidance, professional development, and tool decision-making aligned to privacy, ethics, and academic freedom.
